Work Happiness Formula — by Dan Lynn
By Dan Lynn
I've had a long career and spent a lot of time in different types of jobs and various types of projects. Over time I learned what the drivers of happiness were for me. In fact, I came up with my personal Happiness Formula. It came down to four factors. Impact — does my work matter, and am I having a big impact? Fun — do I actually like the day-to-day? Money — am I being rewarded fairly for what I bring? And Flexibility — do I have some level of flexibility - over my schedule or over my location? For me, if any one of those is missing...don't walk away, run away.
Here's the key: everyone's formula is different. What you value most isn't what the person next to you values most. How high you set your "desired" level for each factor is really you saying how much it matters to you — and the gap between that and where you are today shows exactly where your current job is falling short.
Life is short, and work is one of the biggest pieces of how you spend your time. So it's worth being deliberate about. The Work Happiness Formula won't tell you what to value — it shows you what you value, and how honestly your current job is delivering it. That clarity is the first step to doing something about it.
I developed the Work Happiness Formula into an AI-powered app that is available to everyone for free on this platform.
