I love March. Spring is just days away. Baseball is in the middle of Spring Training. The Masters is not far away. The NCAA Tournament (aka March Madness) has just tipped off. It's an exciting time of the year.

One thing I love about March Madness is that the best players are at their best during the Tournament. As I used to say all of the time to my kids before one of their big sports tournaments — "champions come out at tournament time." It's true. Real champions always seem to rise to the occasion. They just have the heart, instincts, and desire of a winner. They hate to lose. In fact, they absolutely refuse to lose. They have this incredible fire in their belly. They want the ball when the pressure is on — with only seconds left in the game and their team down by 2 points. They give it everything they have, no matter what.

The same is true in business. There are easy stretches and there are hard ones — the deal on the line, the quarter that has to come together, the crisis nobody saw coming. That's exactly when the real players show up. When the pressure is highest and the outcome is in doubt, they don't shrink — they want the ball. They dig deeper, find another gear, and bring more, not less, when it matters most.

Anyone can perform when it's easy. The people and teams who separate themselves are the ones who rise when it counts. So when your tournament moment arrives, don't wait for someone else to take the shot. Want the ball.
